We started the day working on our health poems. Once finished our rough copies we had the choice of starting our good copy on the library computers, or working on our Hatchet Scrapbook if we wanted some extra working time on that today. In Math Mme gave us a division problem to solve. We had to try to find easier division expressions that could help us solve the more difficult one. Check out how many we found! After we came up with lots of options we looked at which expressions we could use together to solve 256 ÷ 4. Students designated to FEO went on a tour of the school today.
Some highlights were: - we got cookies and juice boxes - we were put in groups for tour and spoke better french than tour guides (they said so themselves!) - saw some friends Students that are designated to Branton had Phys. Ed, where they played Hockey. In English students continued to work on their Hatchet Scrapbook assignments. It was Special Lunch today! After lunch we had Buddies! We helped them with some math. They were working on adding tens + ones, and we worked on multiplying tens by ones. After buddies we had Science. We tested our hypotheses from yesterday. Ask about what we observed when we did our experiment! (Our control lifesaver dissolved in 44 minutes and 52 seconds. Reminder: There is no school tomorrow Friday, March 1. Have a great weekend!

Students started the day working on their 'I am Poem' for Pink Shirt Day. Students wrote a poem from the perspective of either the Bully, Bullied, or Bystander. Students that finished early had the chance to design their own Pink T-Shirt that promoted Inclusivity over Bullying. We went to the computer lab to continue working on our Hatchet Scrapbook assignment. After recess we had a number talk. We looked at the following division expressions and considered how they were all related, and how we could use the first 4 to help solve the 5th. Students had Music and Phys. Ed.
After lunch we had a period of independent French reading. After reading we started a new Science experiment. Students were asked to predict what would happen to a Lifesaver if we put it in water. We discussed what it meant to make a hypothesis (and how it should include a reason to support what you predict). Students shared their hypotheses using the form "Je pense_________ parce que ...." Students were then challenged to think of a way that we could speed up the rate at which the lifesaver dissolves. They came up with the following ideas:
We discussed the difference between independent and controlled variables, and why it is important not to change many things at one time. In groups of 2 students were randomly assigned one of the above variables to test, and they began to plan out how they would conduct the experiment. After Science Yacoub shared a story that he wrote with the class. Reminders: Tomorrow is Crazy Hair Day. Some students still have not completed their Social Studies reading + table of similarities or differences. We will be discussing this task as a class tomorrow, so please ensure that it is completed this evening. Students designated to F.E. Osborne will go tomorrow with Mme Amanda, Mr Marshall and Mme MC. Mme April, Mme Guess and Mr André will remain at VAS to supervise students that are designated to other schools. Students will depart at 9:30 and will be at FEO until around 11:35. They will eat lunch upon their return to Varsity. If students have ordered Healthy Hunger Special Lunch it will be set aside for them to have when they arrive back to VAS. We started our day with an independent work period. Many students worked on completing their Social Studies task that we began yesterday. This is homework (due tomorrow) for those students that still have not completed it. Other students practiced for the division assessment in the afternoon.
In English we continued planning our Hatchet Scrapbook task. Mme gave us a copy of the checklist that we made together so that we can make sure we have done everything before we hand it in. If we were finished our plan we started to get to work on the task itself. After recess Seth showed us an experiment he did at home with his mom. They put an egg in vinegar for a day, and the shell dissolved! In Phys. Ed we started our hockey unit. In Health we started an activity for Pink Shirt Day. We discussed the different people involved in a situation of bullying. The Bystander, the Bully and the Bullied. We each drew a piece of paper with one of these roles on it, and had to discuss with other students who picked the same role what it might be like to be that person. We are going to write poems from their perspective in class tomorrow. At lunch all students interested in participating in this years math competition met with Mme Amanda, and have started to prepare for the competition. After lunch we had our division evaluation. Mme April will try to have them marked and returned for Thursday, but will give them back Monday at the latest. After our evaluation Mme put us in new desk groups. Last week we told Mme if we would prefer to sit alone, with a partner, or in a small group. Mme used that information to create the new groups. We have 3 groups of 4, 1 group of 3, 4 groups of 2, and 2 people that wanted to sit by themselves. Reminders: Pink Shirt day tomorrow. Social Studies reading/table to be completed for tomorrow. In the morning we started with Quoi de Neuf, where we shared what we did on the weekend. We got new 'billets'. In math we did our number talk. We had multiple division expressions, all with a divisor of 8, that all built towards the fifth question. We discussed the mental math strategies that helped us solve each of the expressions. For the second part of math we chose 2 division questions and had to show Mme that we could use the traditional algorithm and one other strategy. We took pictures of our work and added them to google drive. We played Thunderball in Phys.Ed. In English we started planning our Hatchet Scrapbook task. We read for 30 minutes if French after lunch. In Social Studies we continued looking at the distribution of First Nations tribes in Canada before the arrival of europeans. We discussed the observations that we had made last week. Mme gave us a text that had some general information about the historical ways of life of First Nations people. We had to read the text and had to find out what different tribes had in common and how they were different. The text focused on Beliefs, Sources of Food, Technology, Trades, Myths and Legends, and Government. Reminders: Division Assessment tomorrow, February 26. Wednesday February 27: Pink Shirt Day at VAS Thursday February 28: Crazy Hair Day Thursday February 28: F.E Osborne Visit March 1: No School for Students Friday March 8: Twin Day We started the day with a period to work independently on unfinished work. We had a substitute during this time, while Mme did some work in the learning commons. After independent work we did our second math station. The stations were the same as yesterday, but we changed which group was at which station. In music we continued to do garage band. After music we did our third math station. Tomorrow we will finish our final station, and do some final review for our assessment on Tuesday. There will be some activities linked at the bottom of the entry to help practice and prepare for the assessment. In English we read the book -ish, and we had to identify the characters' feelings and qualities. We did this to practice for our Hatchet scrapbook assignment. Afterwards we looked through old examples of the Hatchet scrapbook assignment and identified what we thought was done well, and what could have been improved. At lunch the editors and photographers of yearbook club had their photo taken. After lunch we had a period of French reading. In Social Studies we looked at maps that show how Canada evolved over time (from the early 1600's to present day). We talked about what we noticed about the different maps, and then Mme asked us what was missing? We realized that non of the maps showed the different territories before the arrival of europeans. Mme showed us some maps that showed where different First Nations groups lived before contact with europeans. We studied that maps and had to make observations, and say what information the maps gave us. Mme gave students that will attend FEO next year an invitation to the FEO open house and reminded us about the field trip to visit FEO on February 28th. Students that will go to Branton will receive more information later. Reminders: Tomorrow is dress like your favourite book character day. Monday we will have pajama day (for Room 19 only) Division assessment - Tuesday February 26th
Resources to prepare for division assessment: The following link has a number of practice sheets that can be downloaded and/or printed to practice the traditional algorithm of long division. It includes boxes to help keep track of place value. Students should be able to comfortably use the strategy to divide a 3-digit dividend by a 1 digit divisor. https://www.mathinenglish.com/worksheetslongdivision.php?stid=75020 The following site has practice sheets that can be downloaded and/or printed to practice any of the taught division strategies (some sheets do include equations with a 4-digit dividend, students can feel free to try them, but are no required to divide 4-digit numbers in grade 5). without remainders: https://www.mathslibres.com/division_us/division_long_d1cq3c_sr_001.php with remainders: https://www.mathslibres.com/division_us/division_long_d1cd3c_r_001.php If you would like practice word problems for your child to bring home and prepare for the assessment please let me know, and I can upload some examples to google drive. Sorry there was no update yesterday, we ran out of time at the end of the day! This morning we started our day skating with Room 20. There were sleds and other winter activities for students that did not skate. We can back inside and had a snack and warmed up before the rest of our day! English: We started to discuss our final assignment for Hatchet. We are going to be making an audition scrapbook to show our understanding of the book, and the main character (Brain). Our scrapbook needs to have a minimum of 4 illustrations of main events and accompanying captions. Each caption needs : a description of the event, a description of Brian's thoughts/feelings and qualities that are revealed in that event, and an explanation of why Brian reacted in the way that he did to that event. Today we talked difference between feelings and qualities to help prepare for the task. We learned that feelings tend to change more frequently, and are in response to what is happening. Qualities tend to be more long term, and can influence how we respond to events around us. We went to the gym with Room 20 after recess and played "Bombardeau", In Math we were put into 4 groups to work through different math stations. We will have a division assessment Tuesday February 26, and the stations are to help us prepare. Throughout the week we will all work though the following stations. Arithmagones- students were given products and had to find the missing factors. (check out an example here https://nrich.maths.org/7447) Math puzzles- students were given a puzzle and they needed to match the multiplication expression with the correct product. If they finished early they could create their own math puzzle with a provided template. Resolution de problèmes - Students were given 6 division word problems to work through. They need to use the traditional algorithm and at least one other strategy. Solve division with Mme - students worked in small group with Mme to practice using the traditional algorithm to complete long division problems. They were also able to solve using their preferred strategy to check their answer. After lunch students read independently in french for 30 minutes. In Science we continued to discuss mixtures with liquids. We have learned the following new terms: soluté (solute) solvant (solvent) dissoudre (dissolve) soluble insoluble Today we did an experiment to separate mixtures based on density. We mixed glycerine, coloured water, oil, and rubbing alcohol in a graduated cylinder to observe how they settled. Once they settled students used their observations to determine the order of the liquids from heaviest to lightest. Reminders: Friday February 22- Favourite Book Character Day (entire school) Monday February 25- PJ Day (Room 19 only) Tuesday February 26- Division Assessment. We started off our day with some math puzzles where we had to figure out some unknown numbers that were represented by different shapes. In Music we did some Carnaval activities. We danced with partners to Carnaval music and played the spoons. In Phys. Ed we played Bonhomme Dodgeball (a Carnaval version of Dr. Dodgeball). In math we had to make a heart with 26 blocks (20 trapezoid and 6 rhombus blocks). We tried first without a template, and then we could use a template if we wanted to to make a heart shape with the blocks. While we were working on our geometry puzzles Bonhomme came to visit our class! After lunch we had 'les copains'. Our Room 4 buddies came to our class and we made animals with pattern blocks. We had templates that we followed to make different animals. We helped our buddies design a 'palais de glace' for Bonhomme Carnaval. and when we finished we wrote stories about Bonhomme. At the end of day we had our Carnaval parade, where we showed the objects we made for Social Studies. Reminder, all Social Studies explanations are due Tuesday February 19th. This morning we had our last Hatchet literature circle group meeting.
After recess we went to the gym with M. Trevor and participated in Carnaval Phys. Ed activities (hockey and relay races). After Phys. Ed we made our own own 'Ceinture Fléchée' bracelets to wear tomorrow for 'Ceinture Fléchée' day! We got to go outside for a few minutes at lunch to get some fresh air! After lunch we presented our Social Studies projects. We are going to show our models in tomorrow's Carnaval défilé, and then we can bring them all home! (Reminder: Explanations (either written or video) are due Tuesday February 19th. Mme April will upload some photos of our objects soon! We learned some french idiom expressions (les expressions idiomatiques), we had to figure out what they meant, and got to draw what it said. Ex: être dans la lune, quand les poules auront les dents, attacher ta tuque, manger sur le pouce, avoir la faim du loup. Skating has been moved. We kicked off Carnaval week with an assembly this morning. Grade One students performed, representatives from F.E. Osbourne and Tuscany School stopped by, and Bonhomme Carnaval came to visit!
After recess we went to the gym for some Carnaval activities. We played hockey and had ski races. We read "Little Métis and the Métis Sash" by Deborah L. Delaronde. Throughout the story Little Métis tries to help various people, but him and his mischievous friend the wind keep getting into trouble. We learned about the important of the Métis Sash and identified Ojibway words in the text. After reading we discussed how the Métis sash was used and how it might be similar to the 'Ceinture Flechée that Bonhomme wears. Just before lunch we got our new billets (ask me about our billets and how the encourage us to speak French in class) and if everyone can keep at least 3 we will have a pajama day next week! After lunch a volunteer delivered croissants and hot chocolate, they were delicious! We had some time to do some last minute work on our Social Studies projects. The objects need to be ready, and at school tomorrow for our presentations. The written explanations/videos must be finished by next Tuesday February 19th. Each explanation must include - the name of the geographic region. - a description of the object (what did you make?) - at least one connection between the object and quality of life/culture of people in that region. - at one connection between the object and the physical geography of that region. After our working period Mme Harbinson came to discuss inclusivity with us. At the end of the day we finalized our selection of clock buddies, now we have twelve partners ready to go when we need to quickly get together to work on class activities. Math: We have been discussing division with remainders, and how in different scenarios remainders are interpreted differently. Students have been working through division problems and determining whether they need to Ignore, share, use, or add one more to the remainder in order to solve the problem.
We have also been playing "division hockey" to continue to practice our division skills. Social Studies: Students have been finishing up their objects and explanations for their culture/quality of life projects. We will present these projects in a gallery walk format Tuesday February 12th. English: This week we have finished the novel Hatchet. Students will have their final literature circle meeting Tuesday February 12th. French: During this weeks guided reading lessons we discussed the function and purpose and a glossary. Health: We began discussing this months virtue, Inclusivity. We read The Invisible Boy, and began to discuss what Inclusivity means. We will continue to touch on this throughout the rest of the month. Art: Students drew landscapes that represented one of the physical regions of Canada. They then used different patterns, in a variety of colours, to add texture to the various sections of their drawing. Phys. Ed: Students finished their gymnastics unit this week. Mr. Trevor has sent home his assessment of their gymnastics routines. Throughout this week and last week students also had the chance to work one on one with Mme Amanda on their mental math strategies for division. |
