We started our day with 2 science demonstrations. We made slime, and Elephant Toothpaste (Elephant Snot). We had to make observations and decide if the different steps of our demonstrations represented chemical or physical changes.
If you would like to try either experiment at home, or want to check out a few others, the following link has some good activities that you could do with common household items. https://owlcation.com/stem/hands-on-experiments-to-learn-about-chemistry In Music we did Garage Band. In Math we revisited our fourth strategy (finding a common denominator) and learned our fifth strategy (le papillon) for comparing fractions. We practiced both strategies independently and then we played Fraction Battle with our 5 o'clock buddies. We did a reflection for conferences on our work habits and how we behave in class and at school. We identified things we think we're really good at, things we're ok at, and things we could improve. We had to pick two areas that we would like to focus on improving. We had special lunch! After lunch we read in English or French. Some students chose to work on some incomplete assignments. We shared our lifesaver experiment results with Mme so she could organize them in a graph. Come check it out during our conferences! After reading we worked on our Social Studies research project. Students should aim to be finished their visual by the end of the day tomorrow. At the end of the day we did Weebly and Mme took us outside to play because we listened very well and worked hard today! Reminders: The book fair draw is tomorrow, students can return their tickets for a chance to win $25 to spend at the book fair. You can visit the book fair when you come to the school for conferences either Thursday evening or Friday morning.

We worked on the visual part of our Social Studies project. We should be done this part by the end of the week, so that we can start the third (written) portion of our project after spring break. * Students who are not finished the visual by the end of the week will have some work to do at home after the break to catch up.
Before recess we brainstormed what we wanted to show our parents (or tell them about) for during conferences. We had lots of great ideas! In Phys Ed we worked on dance routines! Some people performed their routines on the stage. In Math we started to learn about comparing fractions we learned 4 strategies (we will learn 1 more tomorrow- so today we did 4/5 of our total strategies!) After lunch we did reading, some people to chose to work on incomplete work and some read with Mme (1/5 of the class read with Mme!) After reading we worked on our math reflections for conferences. We did a science demonstration to show that a chemical reaction can cause a colour change. If you have the materials, here is what we did, you can try it at home! Material Needed:
Reminders: Tomorrow is special lunch! This morning we picked new classroom jobs and tidied our desks. We had time to work on the visual for our social studies project before recess. After recess we worked on the following Math problem. We had music and Phys. Ed.
After lunch we had a reading period. During this time we met one on one with Mme to get feedback on our Equivalent Fractions "Check-in" that we completed last week. We could also print our Hatchet Scrapbook tasks that were due today. After reading we had time to work on the questions for our muffin baking activity from Friday, and we observed our salt crystals. After Science we worked on a reflection to share during student led conferences this week. Note from Mme: Our Hatchet Scrapbook Assignment was due today. I received 14 completed assignments today. Please ask your son or daughter if they have completed their assignment, and ensure that it is handed in tomorrow. Tomorrow I will send individual emails to let you know if I have still not received your child's assignment. We had a quick working period this morning for our Hatchet Audition Scrapbook. Reminder that this is due Monday March 18th. At 8:30 we had our dance performance in the gym. We got to see some performances from Kindies, Grade 2 and Grade 6 students as well. After our performance we had a snack, and then finished our math stations that we started yesterday. After math we made our muffins for Chemistry. They were delicious!! Don't they look tasty?
We started our morning working on our Social Studies research projects. Most students are now working on the second part of the assignment, which is creating a visual that shows what they learned about the specific First Nations group they are studying. After Social Studies we worked on our Hatchet Audition Scrapbook assignment. As students finish up they are encouraged to add to their work by a) creating additional event entries for their scrapbook, b) adding more detail to their existing entries, or c) adding an explanation as to why they believe they are best suited to be cast as Brian (by comparing their own qualities to the qualities they have identified for Brian). Tomorrow is the last day to work on this assignment in class, and it is due Monday, March 18th. In math today we started 4 new stations to practice equivalent fractions. The stations were ... a) Fraction Scavenger Hunt b) Number line practice + dominos c) Equivalent Fraction Mazes d) Independent practice (questions from the math textbook). We had a reading period after lunch. Because students work very hard all morning they were allowed to choose whether they read in English of French. Some students chose to work on unfinished work for the second half of our reading period.
Students then had their final practice with Ajay for tomorrow's dance performance. Ajay has asked that students dress in dark clothing tomorrow for their dance, and wear a dark colored or white hat (a baseball hat is preferred, but they can bring a toque if that is all they have). After Phys. Ed students had some time to observe their salt crystal experiment and note their observations in their science notebook. We then had a few demonstrations that required students to make observations and classify the demonstration as an example of a physical or chemical change. This is our learning from today... -We are working on some independent projects such as emoji fractions, First Nations drawing, and writing about our understanding of the novel The Hatchet -In Social Studies, we are taking research notes for our First Nations project -In Physical Education, we danced with AJ and he told us where we are going to dance for our performance. -We practiced our French reading for at least 30 minutes -We are learning about equivalent fractions, and today we showed our teacher what we know -We updated our parents through Weebly;) -Tomorrow is a theme day. Don't forget to wear your PJs! Here is a quick recap of our last two days in Room 19. In English we continued to work on our Hatchet Scrapbook projects. A reminder that these are due Monday March 18th. In Math we worked through 4 new stations to help practice identifying and creating equivalent fractions. The stations were : A) Equivalent Fractions Race, B) Equivalent Fractions Spoons, C) An equivalent fractions puzzle and D) An equivalent fractions emoji coloring activity. Monday we had Phys. Ed and students practiced their dance routine with Ajay. Today students had music and they worked on their garage band projects.
In Science we set up a salt crystals lab on Monday. We discussed the concept of a saturated solution, and what might happen if a saturated salt solution is allowed to cool over time. If you are interested in a fun (and tasty) experiment that you can do at home that covers the same concept, check out the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpOU0Fo7QfU Today in Science we read about and discussed the concept of Physical vs. Chemical changes. Some examples of physical changes we discussed were : cracking and egg, crumpling aluminum foil, changes of state (for example melting a solid to form a liquid), breaking a glass, and slicing an apple. Some examples of chemical changes that we discussed were: baking bread or cookies, burning a match, mold forming on bread, and digestion. We had some time to work on our Social Studies research project today as well. Several students are finishing up the note taking step of the project and beginning to work on the visual component. Reminders: Thursday March 14 is Pajama Day for all of VAS! Friday March 15 is the dance share, you are invited to come see the dance that your child has been working on in Phys. Ed over the past few weeks. We started our morning in the gym practicing our dance with Ajay.
After Phys. Ed we had time to work on our Hatchet Scrapbook project (reminder that this is due Monday March 18). After English we learned more about equivalent fractions. We learned that to find equivalent fractions we can multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number. We practiced doing this and will continue next week. After Math we went to the gym to practice skip counting with our buddies. We made hopscotch games with hula hoops and practiced skip counting out loud as we went through. Our buddies are practicing counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, and we worked on multiples of 6, 7, 8, and 9. After buddies we had a class discussion about ways that we can show respect for each other, for Mme, and for our classroom. It was a good opportunity to make sure that we are all on the same page moving forward. Have a great weekend!! We started our day with English and worked on our Hatchet Scrapbook assignment in the lab.
After English we had some time to work on Social Studies. We continued taking notes for our first nations research project. In Science we took some time to check on the solutions and suspensions that we were attempting to separate by evaporation. We added our observations to our notes from the rest of the experiment. In Music we worked on our garage band projects. In Phys. Ed we learned 2 more moves to add to our dance routine. We will be sharing the dance that we've learned Friday March 15th between 8:30 and 9:00 if parents would like to come see what we have been working on. After lunch we had our independent reading period. In Math we learned about equivalent fractions. We learned that two fractions are equal if they are the same size, or if they are found at the same point on a number line. Reminders: Tomorrow is Twin Day! Dear parents,
Unfortunately we have had a few instances of students' personal belongings going missing from their desks and cubbies. We have had a few conversations as a class about this, and while it stopped for a while, it has started again. I am asking you to please discuss this with your child at home. I asked students today, if they have taken anything belonging to someone else, or borrowed it without asking first, to please return the objects to me. They can place them on my desk anonymously and I will make sure they are returned to the student that they belong to. I have also suggested that students refrain from bringing personal items that they do not need for school. While they are certainly not to blame for their own items going missing, I think if there is something that they would be upset about losing it would be best to keep it at home. Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to send me an email at [email protected] |
