We started our week by sharing a bit of what we did over the weekend, and by choosing new classroom jobs for the next two weeks.
In Social Studies students continued to work on their models. Those who have finished are starting to work on their explanations for each object. They have the option to either write an explanation, or to create a video of them explaining the connections between their objects and the physical geography and culture/quality of life of their region. The criteria for the explanations have been shared with the students via Google Drive. All models must be complete, and brought to school, for Monday February 4th. In Math students continued to practice their long division strategies. They are encouraged to practice all strategies as some are more efficient than others in certain situations. I have suggested that they become comfortable using the traditional algorithm and at least one other strategy. In Science we reviewed the two types of mixtures discussed last week, and students had to separate a heterogeneous mixture of solids based on the size of the individual components. They were given sieves with holes of varying sizes and had to figure out how to use them to separate the mixture of solids. In English students met with their Hatchet groups to share their tasks based on last week's reading. Students also had Music and Physical Education today. REMINDERS: Please return the skating permission forms to the school as soon as possible. If you are interested in volunteering please email me at [email protected] and I will send a form home. Please return the Letter of Intention (blue) that was sent home last week indicating which school your son or daughter will be attending in the fall.

Math:
Number talks- sharing mental math strategies for division, with a focus on annexing zeros, and decomposing numbers to make them easier to divide. Now that we have covered all four division strategies (Using a base 10 model, Traditional Algorithm, Partial Quotients, Area model) students had time to practice each of them through games, colour by number activities, and a scavenger hunt throughout Div 2. Science: This week we discussed the difference between pure substances and mixtures, and learned that there are two types of mixtures (homogeneous and heterogeneous). Social Studies: This week students completed their brainstorm connecting quality of life to the physical geography of their region. They decided on three objects to create that will demonstrate their understanding of these connections, and have started to create these objects using modelling clay and other materials. They have access to clay and other basic art supplies in class. They are welcome to bring additional materials from home (popsicle sticks, cardboard, lego, etc) but this is not required. English: Students continued to work on their SMART goals. They selected three goals, and worked on writing paragraphs that described their goals and the strategies they will use to achieve them. They will have a bit more time to work on the good copy of their goals during our morning independant work periods, and they will be due by Wednesday January 30. Students read chapters 12-14 of Hatchet and worked on their weekly assignment to be shared with their literature circle groups. They will meet Monday January 28. French Grammar: We reviewed -IR verbs and how to conjugate them in the present tense. We read a French story called "La Nixe", and identified the verbs and their subjects within the text. Students that have not finished the rough draft of their SMART goals need to have that completed for Monday January 21.
Math:
Number talks- sharing mental math strategies for multiplication and division. Review of the relationship between division and multiplication. Began exploring the following long division strategies.
We are currently looking at each strategy one at a time, and will continue to practice them throughout the rest of our unit. I encourage you to ask your child to show you the strategies we have done so far, and what their favourite is. Science: Introduction to our Classroom Chemistry unit. What is matter? How can we distinguish between solids, liquids and gases? What are different properties of matter? Social Studies: How is physical geography connected to the culture and quality of life of the people that live in the different geographic regions of Canada? Students are making connections between what they learned through their research project and what we have been discussing about culture/quality of life. They will be creating/identifying 3D objects that symbolise a chosen element of culture/quality of life, and will explain how that is connected to physical geography. English: SMART goals. Students have identified goals they would like to work towards achieving this year both in school and at home. They are currently working to ensure that their goals meet the criteria of SMART goals that we have been discussing in class. French: We have reviewed some of the work with verbs that students did prior to the break such as: - identifying verbs within a given text. - conjugating -er verbs in the present tense. Following a review of -ir verbs we will begin to look at how to conjugate -re verbs in the present tense before taking a look at how to conjugate verbs au passé composé. We also discussed adjectives, and brainstormed examples of adjectives that can be used to describe us for our Je Suis art project. Parents of Room 19,
Now that I am all set up on Weebly I wanted to take the time to say hello to all of you, and to introduce myself. As you already know, my name is April MacQuarrie, or Mme April. I am originally from Nova Scotia, and moved to Calgary almost five years ago upon completing my B.Ed at St. Francis Xavier University. I have been teaching at Varsity Acres ever since , and have just returned after taking a year off to spend with my daughter. I will to continue to communicate what we are learning and doing in Room 19 through this blog, so please check back regularly. If you have any questions or concerns you can find my email and phone number in the 'Contact' section. It has been an absolute delight so far getting to know your children, and I am looking forward to a year full or learning and laughter in Room. 19. |
