In English we worked on personal narratives. Some students are drafting, many are revising, some are editing and a few have started the publishing stage of their narrative.
A reminder that all students should be done their draft by the end of the week (so that when we return to school next week they are ready to revise and edit their work). In Music we talked about music shares, did some rhythms, and worked on our rewrite of Titanium. There was a last minute lyric change, you can hear our final song at the assembly. In Math we used the geoboard app to continue exploring 2D shapes and their different properties. We finished yesterdays shapes and then we did a few additional questions from the text. We had a Phys Ed period with Room 20, and played Bombardeau. Thanks to the volunteers who brought us special lunch! There was a lunchtime meeting for students interested in being animators for this years sports day. After lunch we had our reading and independent work period. In Science we learned about the different living and non-living elements of a wetland ecosystem, and we started to talk about some of the interactions that might occur between some of these elements. We looked at a picture of a wetland and had to identify the living and non-living things that we could see in the photo. Reminders: Weaselhead forms must be handed in tomorrow! Outdoor School forms due June 14. A note from VASPFS: Veseys Seeds and Bulbs have arrived at Varsity Acres School! Orders will be sorted and ready for pick-up on the stage later this week. Pick up times are as follows: Thursday May 30th from 2-4pm. Friday May 31st from 11:15-12:45pm. Thank you for your continued support for Varsity Acres School VASPFS

We started our day working on our personal narrative. We are either drafting, revising, or editing our narratives. We should be done drafting by the end of this week.
In Social Studies we finished up our passports or worked on our mindmaps. In Phys Ed we continued to play tennis (we have all been evaluated now). In Math we used our geo board apps to make specific shape with same sized sides, parallel or perpendicular lines. We had to name them and save them to the iPads. We ate outside again, and some students had Sphero Club (it was the last day). After lunch we had reading and independent work. We went outside for a break to refocus for the rest of the day (we got 16 minutes and 12 seconds). After reading we did Science. We started our unit on Wetlands (Les Écosystèmes Humides). We learned about 4 types of wetlands, and watched a video called "My Rubber Boots". After we watched the video we discussed why wetlands are important, and the need to protect them. Reminders: Tomorrow is Special Lunch. Our fieldtrip to Weaselhead is Monday, forms are due by the end of the week. Outdoor School forms due June 14. First we did English, we had our final three presentations and then we worked on drafting or revising our narratives. A reminder to those who have not finished planning, this should be finished tonight.
In Social Studies we worked on our mind maps, and a few people finished their stations. In Science we read a text to figure out the difference between the climat and weather (Climat doesn't change, and weather changes often). In music we continued to work on your rewrite of Titanium and we signed up for Music Share. This upcoming Music Share is for live performances only. In Phys. Ed M. Trevor did more evaluations. If we weren't being evaluated we made up our own tennis related game, or we practiced playing tennis with our peers. We had lunch outside! We had a presentation from Mme Harbinson (it was her last one). We did reading and unfinished work. After that we explored an iPad app called geoboard in math. We will be using it throughout our geometry unit. Today we had to create two different 4 sided shapes, create a 4 sided shape with only one pair of lines of the same length, and create a six sided figure with no sides of the same length. You can check out the web version of the app here https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/geoboard/ Reminders: Weaselhead forms are due this week (the field trip is Monday June 3) Outdoor School Forms are due June 14th. We started the day by getting billets and we did Quoi de Neuf?
In English we had a few more figurative language presentations and we worked on our personal narratives. Some students are planning, some are drafting, and a few have started revising. Students that are still planning should finish the plan tonight so that they can begin writing tomorrow. After recess we had Phys Ed and M Trevor started our tennis evaluations. In Social Studies some students finished centers that they had missed and the rest of the class started working on a mind map to show what they have learned about the development of Canada through the 8 events that we studied. We had our grade 5 group photo taken outside on the big toy. We moved our desks around to a new seating arrangement. We had time to read and work on incomplete work. We completed a survey that will be used to create our own Grade 5 superhero trading cards. Reminders: Weaselhead forms are due by the end of the week. Please sign and return outdoor school forms for next year by June 14th. In English we worked on our personal narratives.
In Music we are changing the lyrics to the song titanium, the new lyrics will be about Varsity Acres and we will sing it at the assembly. After recess we did math, we started our geometry unit and we learned about quadrilaterals (figures with 4 sides), and then we started quadrilateral robots. Mme Harbinson came and we worked on the task we started with her last time about how we learn best. Sydney, Kaitlyn, Luca, Mira and Hillary presented their figurative language projects. We read and worked independently on incomplete tasks. We figured out who needs to finish which Social Studies stations tomorrow so we can have our catch up period. We started our day talking about our weekends, picking new jobs, and getting new billets!
In English we talked about the goal of writing our own personal narratives and started planning our own stories! We had Phys. Ed with M. Trevor and continued with our tennis unit. In Social Studies we did our last two centers, and tomorrow we will go back and catch up on anything that we missed during our first round. After lunch Emma, Joanah, Austin, and Omar presented their figurative language projects. After the presentations we had our fractions and decimals evaluation. Students that did not finish up will complete the evaluation tomorrow. In English India finished her figurative language presentation. Kate and Sarah presented theirs, and Kaitlyn and Hazel presented a figurative language quiz that they made together.
Afterwards we looked at some past student examples of Personal Narratives, and talked about what was well done, and how the stories could have been improved. In Social Studies we finished up the station that we started yesterday, we have two more left to do! We had Music. In Phys. Ed we practiced some more tennis skills. After lunch we had buddies, we did another kindness activity with our buddies to practice our virtue of the month of Kindess/Obligeance. In Math we did some more review for our evaluation that has been moved to Tuesday, May 20. Mme April has shared a folder called "Fractions/Decimals Review" in GoogleDrive that has other activities and questions that we can do to review for the evaluation. Mme Kate came to visit us with her baby! We started the day with English. As part of our narrative writing unit, we brainstormed some ideas of key events from our past. We ranked these events from positive to negative on a scale of 1-10. This is to help us think of different events that we could maybe write about for our personal narrative.
In Phys Ed we played capture the flag. In Social Studies, we did our next station (to learn about past events in Canada's history). Mme Harbinson came in to our class and we talked about who we are as learners to prepare us for middle school. We talked about things like what subjects we like, if we prefer to work individually or in groups, how we like to get information (listening, reading, etc), how we like to communicate our understanding (orally, in writing, etc.) and if we prefer to type or write by hand. At lunch some students had coding club, there will be two more coding club meetings. After lunch we had Individual work/reading. In Math we worked on review questions for our evaluation. Afterwards we discussed that to give some people more time to prepare, we will have the evaluation next Tuesday, instead of tomorrow. Mme is going to give us some extra resources to study tomorrow. India presented her Figurative Language project (this project is due tomorrow, it should be shared with Mme in Google Drive). We started our day by getting new billets and talking about what we did over the weekend.
In Science we had to use what we had learned last week about clouds to label a cloud diagram and identify different 'families' of clouds. We had music. After Recess we did our next two Social Studies centres. In math we brainstormed what he learned about fractions and decimals, we will have an evaluation Thursday May 16 (we will be reviewing and practicing in class this week). We should be able to: Represent and identify fractions. Find and recognize equivalent fractions. Compare and order fractions. Find fractions and decimals that are equivalent. Represent decimals in different ways (in words, with base 10 blocs, in the developed form, etc.) Compare and Order decimal numbers. Add and subtract decimal numbers. Round decimal numbers. We had reading and independent work time. In English we started to talk about personal narratives. We read three different narratives, and will start writing our own this week. In math we did 2 different names to practice rounding decimal numbers.
In Science we watched a video about different types of clouds. In Phys. Ed we played Bombardeau, we have to knock down the other teams pins without getting hit. Each team won one round. After Phys. Ed we did Social Studies. We started doing centers to learn about 8 different events in Canadian History that had an impact on the development of Canada. We worked on reading and unfinished work after lunch. In English we had our last class period to work on our figurative language project. The project is due next Thursday May 16. Reminders: Tomorrow is the Garage Sale, remember to bring your money and reusable bag. Please return signed and corrected chemistry evaluations by tomorrow. |
