Math:
Number talks- sharing mental math strategies for division, with a focus on annexing zeros, and decomposing numbers to make them easier to divide. Now that we have covered all four division strategies (Using a base 10 model, Traditional Algorithm, Partial Quotients, Area model) students had time to practice each of them through games, colour by number activities, and a scavenger hunt throughout Div 2. Science: This week we discussed the difference between pure substances and mixtures, and learned that there are two types of mixtures (homogeneous and heterogeneous). Social Studies: This week students completed their brainstorm connecting quality of life to the physical geography of their region. They decided on three objects to create that will demonstrate their understanding of these connections, and have started to create these objects using modelling clay and other materials. They have access to clay and other basic art supplies in class. They are welcome to bring additional materials from home (popsicle sticks, cardboard, lego, etc) but this is not required. English: Students continued to work on their SMART goals. They selected three goals, and worked on writing paragraphs that described their goals and the strategies they will use to achieve them. They will have a bit more time to work on the good copy of their goals during our morning independant work periods, and they will be due by Wednesday January 30. Students read chapters 12-14 of Hatchet and worked on their weekly assignment to be shared with their literature circle groups. They will meet Monday January 28. French Grammar: We reviewed -IR verbs and how to conjugate them in the present tense. We read a French story called "La Nixe", and identified the verbs and their subjects within the text.
