In English India finished her figurative language presentation. Kate and Sarah presented theirs, and Kaitlyn and Hazel presented a figurative language quiz that they made together.

We started the day with English. As part of our narrative writing unit, we brainstormed some ideas of key events from our past. We ranked these events from positive to negative on a scale of 1-10. This is to help us think of different events that we could maybe write about for our personal narrative.
In Phys Ed we played capture the flag. In Social Studies, we did our next station (to learn about past events in Canada's history). Mme Harbinson came in to our class and we talked about who we are as learners to prepare us for middle school. We talked about things like what subjects we like, if we prefer to work individually or in groups, how we like to get information (listening, reading, etc), how we like to communicate our understanding (orally, in writing, etc.) and if we prefer to type or write by hand. At lunch some students had coding club, there will be two more coding club meetings. After lunch we had Individual work/reading. In Math we worked on review questions for our evaluation. Afterwards we discussed that to give some people more time to prepare, we will have the evaluation next Tuesday, instead of tomorrow. Mme is going to give us some extra resources to study tomorrow. India presented her Figurative Language project (this project is due tomorrow, it should be shared with Mme in Google Drive). We started our day by getting new billets and talking about what we did over the weekend.
In Science we had to use what we had learned last week about clouds to label a cloud diagram and identify different 'families' of clouds. We had music. After Recess we did our next two Social Studies centres. In math we brainstormed what he learned about fractions and decimals, we will have an evaluation Thursday May 16 (we will be reviewing and practicing in class this week). We should be able to: Represent and identify fractions. Find and recognize equivalent fractions. Compare and order fractions. Find fractions and decimals that are equivalent. Represent decimals in different ways (in words, with base 10 blocs, in the developed form, etc.) Compare and Order decimal numbers. Add and subtract decimal numbers. Round decimal numbers. We had reading and independent work time. In English we started to talk about personal narratives. We read three different narratives, and will start writing our own this week. In math we did 2 different names to practice rounding decimal numbers.
In Science we watched a video about different types of clouds. In Phys. Ed we played Bombardeau, we have to knock down the other teams pins without getting hit. Each team won one round. After Phys. Ed we did Social Studies. We started doing centers to learn about 8 different events in Canadian History that had an impact on the development of Canada. We worked on reading and unfinished work after lunch. In English we had our last class period to work on our figurative language project. The project is due next Thursday May 16. Reminders: Tomorrow is the Garage Sale, remember to bring your money and reusable bag. Please return signed and corrected chemistry evaluations by tomorrow. We started our day reviewing expectations for during the PATs, and making sure that we understood what we needed to do in Math and Science before we got started.
In Math practiced rounding sorting decimal numbers according to which tenth, hundredth, or whole number they would round to. In Science we read about different types of clouds and what they indicate. We will continue to discuss this tomorrow. After Science we had Music and then Phys. Ed. After lunch we had reading and independent work. During English we worked on our Figurative Language project. Some students who have finished up started an extra task to further demonstrate their understanding of figurative language. A reminder to please return signed and corrected quizzes by Friday. We started our day with Social Studies, and finished our discussion of The Fur Trade and La Nouvelle France.
We had a presentation from Nurse Jen on personal hygiene. In Phys Ed we played Dr. Dodgeball and Benchball. We learned about rounding decimal numbers to the nearest one, tenth, and hundredth in math. We read and did independent work after lunch. In English we had time to work on our Figurative Language projects. Note from Mme: Students were given back their Chemistry Evaluations today, they have the opportunity to make corrections prior to giving it back to me. Please sign the quizzes and return them to my by Friday May 10. The Grade 6s had PATs this morning, so we had to be super quiet.
We started our day with Organisation, and we get new classroom jobs. Then we worked on math. We had some questions from the text on subtracting decimal numbers that we needed to finish. If we were done we had a few activities to practice adding and subtracting decimals that we could do (a star colour by numbers sheet, an emojii colouring sheet, a puzzle and a decimal challenge). In Phys Ed we went outside and we learned how to pass and catch for Lacrosse. After Phys Ed we did French, we worked on the questions and activities for the article "l'interdiction des pailles en plastiques jetables". After lunch we read or did independent work. In Social Studies we worked with our articles about The Fur Trade and La Nouvelle France. With a partner we had to discuss what information from the text is just interesting to know, and what information tells us about something that had a big impact on the development of Canada. Reminder: The Garage Sale is this Friday. We started this morning talking about how the last two days went while Mme had to be away.
In Social Studies we shared some of the questions that we created based on the texts we have read about The Fur Trade and La Nouvelle France. We talked about some of the way that these events influenced what Canada is today. Those of us going to Branton next year went on a tour of the school, and the rest of the class went to M. Marshall's room. They did a wormhole art project and had time to work on incomplete work. After lunch we had our reading period. In English we continued to work on our figurative language projects. We looked at examples of projects and talked with our groups, and then as a whole class, about what was done well and what could have been improved. Reminders: Tomorrow if photo day! Student's should wear a nice outfit and bring an object that is special to them to have in their photo. We started our day by sharing what we did over the long weekend, and then taking some time to do some spring cleaning of our desks. We had lots of "feuilles sauvages" that needed to be put in the correct duotangs!
Our school nurse, Nurse Jennifer, came to our class to do a presentation on Canada's New Food Guide. We played basketball games outside for Phys. Ed. In Science we learned how to make "un anemomètre " to measure wind speed using "un rapporteur" (a protractor), "une balle de tennis de table", "de la ficelle"(string) and "du ruban" (tape). We took them outside to test them out, and we will test them again on a windier day! We had a period to work on reading or incomplete work. In Math we worked independently to show Mme what we know about comparing and ordering decimals. Ask me how come you can not just count the digits to compare two decimal numbers? Reminders: Students should make sure that their Social Studies project is shared with Mme in Google Drive today. Students who will be going to Branton in the fall need to return their field trip forms for our Mat 1st visit to Branton. We are in need of a parent volunteer to join us on this trip. If your police clearance is up to date and you are able to join us please email Mme April at [email protected] We started our day working on our Onomatopoeia Pop Art assignment. Many students finished up, and others will need to work on it during our independent work time next week.
Mme read us The Lorax and we discussed what we thought the message of the book was. In Math we did another round of Connect 4 to practice ordering decimal numbers. We had Music and Phys. Ed. We had some time to read or work on incomplete works. We went to our Buddy Class to discuss with them what we learned from the Lorax, and we got to watch some of the movie. Next week we will continue to discuss the impact of our small actions on the environment, and think of some things that we can do as a class to make a positive impact. Reminders: Our Social Studies project is due Tuesday April 23. Parents, please ensure that your child has placed the document in their Grade 5 Social Studies folder in googledrive, this way it does not need to be printed. Students will need to have identified a song with at least three different types of figurative language for next week. Please make sure that they have an idea of which song they would like to analyze, and ensure that it is school appropriate (in content and language). |
